One of the main sports in Canada, other than hockey, is making fun of politicians of all levels from municipal to provincial to federal. In a way this is curious because this group of people contains some of the finest Canadians in the land who have in most cases devoted all their time and energy to make Canada a better place. Even more curious is that often the people whining the loudest never even bothered to vote. Furthermore I suspect this phenomenon is similar in other countries.

So with that introduction here we go- the idea is to uncover bullshit and suggest a fix. Because despite the fact our elected reps are dedicated hard working human beings, there still seems like a lot of bullshit in politics. Our system is set up to gain votes not necessarily to govern in the interests of all citizens. Consequently any special interest group in Canada has been able to garner much more than its fair share of public resources. And every day in the House of Commons we see examples of silly Political Partisanship where the objective is to "score points" rather than to govern the country. A lot of us are just getting sick of it. 

The blame for all this can be laid on several heads, the politicians and leaders, the citizens who whine but never vote or get involved, the media which concentrates on all the bad news and loves reporting on scandals, the average Canadian who has allowed this system to continue for decades. The Party Leaders, Govt House Leaders, Speaker and Members all play a role in what has become today a fiasco best displayed by the absolutely ridiculous behaviour in question period and the gong show now occurring in the Ethics Committee chaired by Liberal MP Paul Szabo.

You need a thick skin and a sharp stick  to be a politician in Canada

What I find particularly unfortunate and sad is that our MPs are some of the most dedicated, intelligent and hard working members of our society but the system in Ottawa takes them in and chews them up. Do yourself a favour and watch a few of the excellent interviews from Ms. Catherine Clark in beyond Politics on CPAC as she interviews our politicians in a relaxed atmosphere where their real characters are shown. Most of them are nice people. Even that rascal Jack Layton seemed quite reasonable- much to my surprise!)

So here we will look at some examples of bullshit in our politics and suggest ways to fix it. Could it work? It could. Politics seems to be the never ending story and it changes daily. We all have a say but making a change in the system is a huge challenge and the actual levers of power seem concentrated in a few people who act behind the scenes out of public view and scrutiny. In that sense our politicians are the puppets and the puppet master remains invisible. Its safe to conjecture that the puppet masters rank in the upper elite of our society in terms of power and asset value. So its not rocket science to figure out who they are.
