We support our troops -we need a plan "B"

Canadian Forces and Afghanistan

We have the best troops in the world. Our country supports them 100%. The Afghanistan NATO mission is not going well and is generating huge losses and costs while the situation for the people there seems to be getting worse. We take a long hard look at just what is going on and it's not pretty.

We have an online poll for you to express what Canada should do in Afghanistan. Nearly 100% of us support our troops but the mission is another issue. 10 choices are offered for you to vote on and an "other" category if none of them fit your views. Here is a chance to share your opinions on the this very important topic.

Many now are standing up and asking the hard questions.  We feel the best support for our forces is to make sure they have the best plan and best equipment -not placed in a position where victory is impossible and losses are unreasonably high and billions of dollars of equipment is being worn out and destroyed. We don't want our troops to be what a retired Canadian Army Col recently called "sitting ducks".

Recent reports are that the Taliban has grown to 8000 fighters and 150 training camps and our troop strength has stayed the same. We need a plan B. As one of our commanding generals said "we paid for this information"- and I suggest its time to use it. We now know we cannot protect our troops against the IED- what are we going to do- simply loose more- or apply what we have learned for a plan B? Canadian troops and taxpayers have paid a very high price for this mission -many would say much too high and it's simply time to re-think it and do the right thing -for our troops and taxpayers first and for Afghanistan next as ultimately it is their problem to solve.

Everyone there seems to agree a military solution is impossible. If this is the case and if the majority of Canadians want us out then -why are we still there? Our troops are brave and professional and will go where we send them with the equipment we give them and get the job done. Do we really want to send them back for a forth and fifth rotation to this arm pit of the world? How would you like to go back to this war zone five times? I wouldn't. Because if you go back for five rotations something is wrong. Some of our troops have gone back eight times!

And if a military solution is possible then lets get it over with and make any necessary changes in the rules of engagement to end the war quickly. If that means using overwhelming force to crush the enemy- lets hold our noses and do it.  Canada does not have the right mix of equipment to fight an offensive war so it will be left to the USA to clobber the enemy into submission.  That's how other wars were won.

Canadians participated in saturation bombing of Germany. You reduce the other side to rat shit and they give up and then you move on from there.  The system is very brutal but it works and Germany is an example as it is now the largest exporter of goods on the planet. . Squandering the best troops in the world and countless billions of dollars and still not seeing any progress is not the way to go. And keeping a stiff upper lip until 2011 and taking another 100 deaths and more billions of costs is just plain stupid. Who are we trying to impress?
