I have received
several dozen e-mails asking me if the Olympics were any
good? This is a bit surprising because one might think
that this would be a personal decision based on watching
them yourself. Apparently not.
"Dear
Marcie, Miss Farsea could you please ask your CEO Capt
Ron about the Olympic games? We just don't know what
to think! Thanks" - Ted in Sudbury
"Dear
Corporate Secretary, Marcie could you be a dear and
ask your boss what he thinks about the Olympics?
Thanks" - Alice in Saskatoon
"Dear
Capt Ron, CEO We are in a huddle Sir in an
unnamed Board room on Bay Street and none of us here
can make up our minds about the Olympics. Were they
good or bad? Please let us know what you think.
(Please say Hi to the Corporate Secretary for us)
Thanks eh! " -Chuckster on Bay
Yo
Capt. Ron! What are your thoughts on the Olympics
closing ceremonies? - Also the Corporate Secretary is
invited to the opening of our new Office tower. Donald
T. NYC
The media showed
pictures of selected Canadians going berserk with
uncontrollable joy whenever a medal was earned. They
played these images over and over again. One might think
that those images represented the feelings of the entire
country rather than those few thousand, affluent Canucks
who could afford to pry several thousand loons from the family food
and rent budget to fund the
expensive trip to BC and the tickets to view these
taxpayer funded events. CTV made millions on the
Olympics and would be loath to report that the closing
ceremonies sucked because if for no other reason they
are trying to sell CDs on the games. In fact a lot of
people made a lot of money on the games and they too
wish them to be a success.
This is not to say
that Canadians didn't enjoy watching our hockey teams
vanquish the opposition or our skiers or skaters
compete. Most Canadians love a good hockey game and they
really enjoyed seeing our teams win. Every TV in Canada
was tuned to the final Men's hockey game. But was it worth
the 117 million dollars it cost and the billion dollars
paid for security? No it was not. Not
during a recession when too many Canadians are visiting
food banks and declaring bankruptcy and maxing out their
family debt..
But what about the
closing ceremonies? Were they any good? In a word - No-
I think they sucked. Its not as if the talent was not
there because it was. But something went dreadfully
wrong. It is almost the Canadian way to complete the
entire task to an impeccable standard and then fall flat
on our faces in the last act. Like we have never done
that
before! With the exception of Avril Lavigne
the "entertainers" failed to entertain. In
fact some of them and I won't name them because they
know who they are - were so bad that they were embarrassing.
Others were only slightly better. None of them put on a
show the quality of say K.D. Lang in the Calgary
Olympics. That young lady was bouncing over the
stage like an energizer bunny and had the entire
audience energized and impressed. K.D set the bar.
As far as the
inflatable beavers and moose and mounties - whoever made
them made a huge amount of money. So good for them. One
of the many problems in the entertainment was the
obvious attempt to be politically correct. Yes you can
be politically correct but usually when you do that the
concept of entertainment gets tossed out the door. And
that is what happened here.
One suspicion that
all Canadians have is that our politicians will use
these tax funded events to gain political points via the
numerous "photo ops" and the good will that
the games provide. In fact that is what happened here.
There was our Prime Minister the dude who shut down
Parliament to save his skin- prominently displayed in
the stands in his Canada jacket. The so called
sponsors of the games where using advertising slots to
flog their products. In some cases they actually had our
Olympic athletes speaking on their behalf. In fact a
visit to the golden arches revealed our gold medal
winners in five foot posters attempting to sell trans
fat burgers. In short they
attempted to boost the value of their brand by mixing in
the fresh faces of our best athletes. In a word it was
disgusting. Perhaps the worst example was the Pepsi
Canada cheer which most Canadians found revolting. Media time is oxygen to politicians and yet
again- here they were sucking up the media time earned
by hard working and dedicated athletes. YUK!
Was there anything
good about the games then? The Athletes were fantastic.
I just think there were too many hanger on's trying to
earn a buck or a vote off them. They were the real stars
of the games not the politicians, the suppliers, the advertisers
or the TV networks. Canada's gold medal count was
impressive although expensive. Yes we could have spent
that billion plus on much better things but the money is
now spent and it did have a positive effect on the medal
count so lets celebrate that eh! But lets admit it. The
billion dollars plus would have helped our poor and
unemployed and they did without. That was wrong.
This website has a
well earned reputation for uncovering bullshit and
suggesting a better way. We are not members of any
special interest group or political or religious
interests. Was there bullshit in the 2010
Winter Olympics? Absolutely! But not from the Athletes.
They did a fantastic job and we can be very proud of
them. Proud of them for competing and proud of them for
winning medals against the best in the world.
The reality in an
Olympics competition is that there are only three
winners - gold, silver and bronze. Perhaps there should
really be a forth winner. I think all competitors should
receive a medal- an Olympic Competitors Medal because
just being selected as a competitor is winning as you
are the best your country can offer.
And perhaps in the
future there should be a rule that politicians cannot be
photographed at Olympic events. It's all about the
athletes not about somebody trying to scrounge up enough
votes to keep them in office in the next election.
Well done Athletes!
