This topic refers to people who mistakenly believe that they can get or do anything by pounding away on a computer keyboard. This is bullshit! Lets trash this stupid concept now.
In fact there are many situations where a phone call or personal visit works when an email or visit to a website doesn't. This is an important concept. It takes you years to learn that.
Life as we know it has NOT completely converted to computers. Many business's have only rudimentary customer computer support and many have absolutely none. Many continue to keep paper records and some do not keep any records. Many situations that have been "computerized" simply do not work or work well.
I am NOT anti-computer. In fact I have been working with computers since they were invented both in business and in personal life. I know where they work well and I also understand where they don't work very well or not at all.
A typical computer nerd will have an up to date system, a powerful computer and a PDA that "talks" to his computer which is part of a home or business network that connects other computers and his lap top and a high speed cable or ADSL connection to the internet. We are talking a significant investment here both in money and in time to set up and maintain the system. Cost wise we could be looking at $5000 or more for the hardware and perhaps $100 a month or more for the internet connection, anti virus software subscription and miscellaneous costs. Depreciation on the system would be approximately $125 monthly and software updates would be approximately $30 a month given the operating system is replaced every three years. The purchase and maintenance of additional software could be in the $50 or more range on average per month. In summary computer nerds could easily be experiencing costs of $300-$500+ per month more or less- likely more JUST for their computer habit. The question then is are they getting those benefits from their computers? I suspect not.
When you look at what you can get for $300-$500 or more per month you might be surprised. You can buy a car! You can go on a very nice vacation. You can help your kids with school or university costs. You can establish some savings. Buy some nice clothes. Purchase a new TV. Buy a boat. Purchase something nice for the spousal unit. If you think about how much time it took to earn that money after taxes you might be surprised. In any event a sober second look at the money flowing into your computer habit might be wise.
We have something the Navy calls a "Mk1 eyeball". The computer doesn't have this. We also have the human sense of feel or touch and again the computer doesn't.
My advice, after a career of working with computers is to simply turn them off every once in a while and go out into the real world and enjoy it. Before its too late and your past is a blure. Pick up a book and read it. Go to a movie. Go fishing. Go out in your boat. Go for a walk. Play some sports or watch some. Get off the couch. Go rock hounding. Learn a new language. Go out with some friends. Visit a foreign country. Meet some new friends. Build something. Design something. Get away from your computer!
Get away from that Bullshit computer and enjoy your life! Sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste-these are the five basic human senses and your silly computer has none of them.
