STRANGE FLOWER GROWS IN SNOW!

There is a very strange phenomenon occurring in North Bay, Ontario. In an area in Northern Canada where winter lasts for several months a strange yellow flower has been vigorously growing in the front yard of a local resident.

Scientists are unable to determine why this is occurring other than the fact that the packet of seeds was left on top of a TV which had a high voltage transformer for several weeks before planting and it is conjectured that the induction from the low frequency waves of the transformer somehow altered the chromosomal makeup of the plant to allow it to live in sub freezing temperatures.

Further testing will need to wait until the plant ceases to bloom because the testing would be of a destructive nature and would kill a living plant. The plant has been identified as a female plant and apparently a male plant and honey bees are required before the plant can reproduce and form seeds. It is hoped that this will occur in the spring or early summer. 

Also of note is the fact that apparently the plant is generating its own heat via a form of exothermic reaction. If you look closely at the pot the plant is in you can see that snow around the base of the plant has actually melted and heat from the plant has cracked the container itself! Scientists are suggesting that the heat producing capabilities of the plant could in fact solve global warming and end North America's reliance on fossil fuels to keep warm in the winter.

 

The exothermic reaction is thought to possibly be associated with he plant's methane production which may be burning anaerobically thus releasing heat. There is another theory that the maple trees in the owners' front yard are somehow contributing maple sap high in natural sugars to the erstwhile plant and that somehow it is cunningly processing these sugars even in sub zero temperatures. The neighbors like the plant saying that it lends a bit of color to all that snow but cautioned this reporter that normally you do not eat yellow snow. They didn't say why.

The owner is offering the rest of the packet of seeds to the highest bidder or one million whichever is highest. A large oil company apparently is set to make an offer of $ 500 contingent on the seeds germinating but the owner said "he didn't get to where he was today by getting sucked into a  deal like that" and wishes to sell the package "as is" or not at all. Noting that there are "several dozen seeds" in the packet he is convinced he can get more for them by selling them one at a time.

The neighbors have been trying to explain the danger of his thinking but so far he has resisted saying that " his head hurt "or he "had type 2 diabetes and his sugar level was off" or that "he was retired and had a web page to work on" or that he" needed to eat lunch." 

A local commented that "winter has been lasting a long long time this year despite global warming and that it was not uncommon for folks to come down with a severe case of cabin fever which caused some strange behavior but which usually sorted itself out in the first week of Spring."

Meanwhile the big yellow flower is flourishing in the sub zero temperatures and snow and remains a mystery!

Update May 11/2008  Since originally writing this article we have received emails from plant people all over the world enquiring about the welfare of this wonder plant and asking for more details and seeds. 

The flower continues to flourish despite the fact the owner refused to water for it or care for it in any way. The flower has apparently eaten the other vegetation in its pot in order to survive and the fact that it lived through a brutal Northern Ontario winter and now Spring has scientists "completely flummoxed" Some are theorizing that the high latitudes and hole in the ozone have allowed the plant to live off pure energy. Others are convinced that the plant holds the secret to free energy and possibly eternal life! 

Neighbors are saying that while they liked the flower against the background of snow that now they were getting sick of it and the thousands of cars that drive slowly by to snap its picture. They drive by because the owner is offering the plant for pictures at $10 per snap should they set foot on his lawn. 

One child tried to pick the plant but was treated to a 10,000 volt electrical shock from the plant's leaves and now the child must relearn a lot of the words he has used and his Doctor suggests the young lad may have a phobia against Christmas trees and anything electrical in the future. The plant only generates a low amperage somewhat like a tazer so no lasting damage! And the owner has graciously posted a sign in English and French stating that visitors should not try to pick the plant as" they would be severely electrocuted or killed as a result." The French version reads slightly differently but as the owner said French is not his mother tongue. The plant has been continuously blooming now for nearly a year!
