Our premise is that 25% of the population is...stupid and we prove it!
A strange fact about the Canadian population and I think this may apply to other countries too, is that a certain percentage of the population is stupid. Too stupid to pound sand down a rat hole. I will start this off by expressing a few opinions then introduce the proof via the application of the scientific method. The opinions are actually the premise. Here goes!
Now I better make it clear at the start that I am not referring to people who are mentally retarded. They can't help how they act. In fact some of them act pretty smart. No -I am talking about the rest of the people who are perfectly capable of making good decisions but instead continually and consistently make stupid ones. It is entirely possible for the stupid person to have an high IQ and or to have an advanced education, They will still act stupid. That is the point of discussion here.
This level of stupidity represents a huge burden to society. And I am not sure that there is any answer to it. You cannot legislate against stupidity. We have tried and it doesn't work. You cannot cure stupidity -again we have tried as a society to educate our citizens but with a proportion of them the education doesn't work -they just continue on doing stupid things.
We have set up all sorts of filtering mechanisms in society to keep stupid people out of certain critical jobs but even there we get the odd exception. The present leader of the Liberal Party of Canada is a good example. Nobody would dispute the man's intellectual abilities yet...he continues to act ...stupid. Ever watch Question Period in the House of Commons lately? And certain political parties seem to attract stupid people like a magnet.
Unfortunately, stupid people have the vote. So when trying to get elected you need to convince the stupid person to vote for you too. Stupid people also soak up the media so again you need to have printed media, radio and television tailored to them.
Stupid people buy things so you need to appeal to stupid people when you sell items. For example we purchased a website for Aliens and UFO's not because we believed in them but because 25% of the population does and we like to keep as many people happy as possible. In fact after reading it perhaps there is something in it! And perhaps certain stupid things aren't really that stupid after all. So go figure! Everyone loves Bob and Doug McKenzie and they made millions so how stupid was that?
Religions need to appeal to stupid people. Restaurants need to serve stupid people food. Schools need to appeal to stupid students with special courses suited just for them. But it doesn't do any good. And we all can see the number of stupid TV programs and TV ads.
We progress thru life in a sea of stupidity. We are surrounded by it and must live with the byproducts of it. Actually, it's very frustrating! At this website we try our best to offer a better way of dealing with problems like this. This one is a real challenge!
You may notice the comments section to online news broadcasts where the public is invited to make comments and give the thumbs up or down in support of these comments. It really doesn't matter what the comment is - stupid people will vote the opposite way. If for example a young child is pulled from a burning building one person might comment " lucky the young lad survived" then the stupid people will weigh in with thumbs down votes. This will set the original commentator off and he or she will post a second comment calling the nay sayers stupid and insensitive and they will then vote thumbs down again. Don't believe me? Check out any news forum where comments and votes are accepted and you decide. In short we have stupid people everywhere and we need to find a way of dealing with them.
It is frustrating that stupid people don't have a basic understanding of science or math, that they have no critical ability to discern the difference between bullshit and truth, that they consistently can be depended on to do the stupid thing in nearly every situation. Even educated, so called intelligent people can be stupid.
Examples you say! -Consider the following observations:
The drunk driver who speeds down the street and runs down your mother, wife and kid then says he was stressed out because he had lost his driver's license and needed it for work and he was late eh. The student who spends 4 years at university to get a degree in sociology and a big honking student load debt and then gets a job as a welder. The renter who smokes and forgets to change the battery in his smoke alarm and burns down the family home which isn't insured and his kids get third degree burns and need health care for years. The stupid driver who skimps on tires and then has a blow out taking his family on a vacation. The TV viewer who sees somebody express an opinion about somebody on a news program and then accepts the comments as truth even when all other evidence indicates they are wrong. The couple who decide to divorce after several years of marriage and then can't agree on the terms so the lawyers end up getting 90% of the assets. The fat person who practices gluttony then complains about their health or weight. The driver who goes and buys a huge gas guzzling truck seating seven when all they need is a small economical vehicle to go to work for one. The idiot who parks in the handicap zone leaving his car running with his little kid in the back seat as he rushes in to buy some beer. The obese person who gets a triple burger, fries and a litre of sugar pop and then orders up three donuts. The stupids who leave their kids in the casino parking lot as they go in to play the slots and loose this months food money. Oh and lets not forget the stupids who cut the brake lines of Liberal supporter's cars in Toronto. This is an example of extreme stupidity. The sad thing is that when they catch the culprits they will invariably find that they have been acting stupid all their lives.
I would like to say that none of this happens but then I would be lying to you. It all happens. Why? Because of the stupid people. Here is one example from our good neighbors to the south.
A 56-year-old Milwaukee man is accused of shooting his lawn mower because it wouldn't start. Keith Walendowski who told police he felt he had a right to shoot his mower has been charged with felony possession of a short-barreled shotgun or rifle and misdemeanor disorderly conduct while armed.
According to the criminal complaint, Walendowski says he was angry because his Lawn Boy wouldn't start Wednesday morning.
He told police: "I can do that, it's my lawn mower and my yard so I can shoot it if I want."
A woman (likely also stupid) who lives at Walendowski's house reported the incident. She says he was intoxicated. Walendowski could face up to an $11,000 fine and six years and three months in prison if convicted. Now some of you will say that this fellow did nothing wrong. This would be a good indicator that you are in the same group. Sorry. But clearly shooting a lawn mower because you are too stupid to start it is simply a stupid thing to do. This poor gentleman cannot help himself because clearly he is stupid. Another indicator is the abuse of alcohol. And perhaps his physical appearance although we can't help what we look like we can try a bit harder to clean ourselves up a bit more! This gentleman is a good looking human being IF he got a haircut and a shave. Most people clean up well.
You might ask if in fact there are stupid people -then what is their percentage in society? I don't know. (how does one know these things?) Normally we go to an agency which monitors statistics. But Stats Canada would never dream of monitoring this one. It would inflame the population. And yet clearly it would be most advantageous to know what the percentage of stupid people in society is. One could then better serve this unfortunate group and possibly work to reduce the negative effects they have on our society. For example you could take away their right to vote. Sounds drastic but think about it. These people are stupid. Every time they vote they make a stupid choice. They are ruining the democratic process for everyone else. Not so stupid now is it! And perhaps we could prevent stupid people from getting driver's licenses and stupid fat people from going to donut shops or ordering up triple burgers. Sounds drastic again but we would actually be doing them a favor. As strange as it seems. In short we need to think outside the box and come to grips with the reality in our society. Because they are everywhere. Where you least expect them sometimes. Doing their thing. So to speak...
Trot over to our Bicycles page and peruse the stats on bike accidents from head injuries then note the percentage of bike riders who don't wear a helmet. Its all there. Its all simple math. And again it discloses the fact that a certain percentage of the population is just plain stupid.
My guess is that the percentage of stupids in our society is someplace between 10% as an absolute low to someplace in the 60% range depending on the group measured. Lets call it 35% for discussion purposes. Now we will use the scientific method to further investigate this.
So here is the premise. 35% of Canadians are stupid. Now if this is true one might think that 35% of the population might act in a predictable fashion given the same stimulus. So you could say that 35% of the population will consistently drive the wrong vehicle, will become obese and out of shape and unhealthy, will have problems supporting themselves, will do poorly in school, will make poor decisions on careers and mates, will eventually do something that will result in their untimely death.
So that's the premise now we need to do some observations. To see if the premise holds up. It looks like the percentage of obese Canadians is at approximately 25%. About 28% of Canadians don't graduate from high school. About 38% of Canadians divorce by the 30th anniversary. The average life span of a Canadian is approximately 80. But approximately 26% of this total die prematurely .
So the indicators bounce up and down a bit but one can appreciate the possibility that the percentage of stupid people in Canada is most certainly over 20% and possibly under 35%. If one had to put a hundred bucks on it 25% might be a relatively safe number.
I admit there is more research that needs to be done here but at this point a ball park number is fine for discussion purposes.
Does the 25% jive with your observations? Would you say that approximately 25% of the people you know fall into the stupid category? I found this clip on youtube that seems to support the concept that stupidity may exist on both sides of the border and likely in more or less the same proportions.
Quick now this is a test. If you blow yourself up is that smart or stupid? Hey if you had to think about it you fail eh!
As you may have guessed there is a reason why this problem is not being addressed in public. It would offend people. Nobody likes to be told they are stupid. They might know it or they might figure it out over time but they don't want anyone to talk about it. It would hurt their feelings and there is nothing they can do about it anyway. Tell the young lady in the suicide vest that she is stupid. What is she going to think? What is she going to do?
Tell this young lady that she is stupid and drinking too much is bad for her liver. What will she say? And how will she feel? When she is 50 she will be waiting in the queue for a liver transplant. Exactly.
Tell this woman that she is stupid and will soon die if she doesn't eat. She will tell you where to go and call her lawyer! Then about a year later she will die after soaking up hundreds of thousands of health care dollars.
Tell that young mother that her kid looks stupid and she will likely punch in the nose you and tell you to mind your own business.
Tell these kids they are being stupid and should be learning how to play the piano instead. They will swear at you and rob you to buy more drugs. They will just keep on doing stupid things.
So where are we on this topic?
I don't think we are making any progress here...so we made up some stickers with one of the Corporate Secretary's favorite sayings.
"What do you do when you live in a shoe?" -no not that one this one....
Imagine the fun one could have with this bumper sticker and access to the spouses or ex's car, the boss's car, an environmentally incorrect SUV or whatever the possibilities and fun and endless. The cost is small. You know where to stick them. They stick on anything. Don't get mad -get even! Have one ready for when you could use it -makes a nice gift too!

I received an excellent suggestion on how to identify our Stupid drivers. The existing situation is that each Province enforces its highway safety act and assigns fines to driver infractions. The driver pays the fine and collects points on his or her license which then results in higher insurance rates for them. The suggestion is incredibly clever. You see the stupid driver is able to do all this in private. They pay the fine and nobody but them knows about it. They have a high insurance rate but again nobody else knows. Its their little secret so to speak. So when you are following a car you don't know if that person is a good or a bad driver. Sometimes you find out the hard way. Bad drivers often have multiple tickets. Thanks Marcie for the great idea! Here is the suggestion:
STUPID STICKER FOR BAD DRIVERS!
A driver with 3 or more points on their license must place a magnetic "S" on the front and back of their vehicle within one foot of their license plate. The sign would be 6" (about 15cm) square with a red background and white letter and would be highly visible. The "S" would stand for Stupid. We could also say it stood for "Safety violation" but soon the word would get out that you had a Stupid sticker on your car. The entire world would know. The sticker would need to be on the vehicle for as long as your points last. This would be a HUGE incentive to be a better driver and would save several of those 2800 lives and thousands of injuries that we have on Canadian highways each year. The graduated drivers program in some jurisdictions already requires that a driver have a similar sign with the letter "N" on it so there is a precedent. Think of the psychology here. You have a nice car but then you need to put an "S" on it and instead of everyone complementing you on the car they realize that you are a bad driver. You will impress nobody then. How far do you think the young man will get when he rolls up to his girlfriends house there is Dad waiting for him on the front steps. He sees your "S" and so much for that date with his little Princess. You loose.
I think there is huge value here. Its a simple idea that would be easy and inexpensive to implement and it would work. If you know anybody that you think would be interested in supporting the idea please refer this page to them. You could be saving somebody's life possibly even your own, a family member or friend some day. Wouldn't it be nice if you KNEW that a "stupid driver" was headed your way? You might take a little more care getting by them. You might not drive in their car. They might smarten up. All because of a little magnetic sign with an "S" on it. Its such a simple, cost effective idea that would save lives and reduce injuries that you will likely never see it implemented.
Update October 15/2008 Canadian Election and Stupidity We chose certain selected indicators to gauge the degree of stupidity in Canadian society. Another one we can apply is the percentage of people who did NOT vote in the recent federal election. There will be some who will say this is not a good indicator of stupidity and others who will say that it is. We will add this to the mix and if you don't like this particular indicator feel free to consult some of the others that we have applied. Here goes. 41% of Canadians who were eligible to vote didn't. My opinion is that these people made a stupid choice in short that they acted stupid. Remember that these are eligible voters so it does not indicate that 41% of Canadian society is stupid because our society also includes millions of people who are not yet old enough to vote. As a result of this really stupid decision the "winners" in the election process got 37.6% of the votes cast. When you do the math this translates to approximately 22% of the eligible voters and this means that approx 78% of the eligible voters in Canada either voted for another party or didn't vote. This is totally ridiculous.
We can say with considerable certainty that the folks who are managing Election Canada are stupid and they really should be fired as they are not doing their jobs. We can also note that the media seems incapable of doing the very simple math required to report on this situation and so they too are not doing their jobs. In summary we can say without any hesitation that the winner of the 2008 Canadian General Election was ....stupidity. The stupid people actually won! We paid over $300,000,000 to prove that we are stupid. Those that didn't vote, those that didn't get the vote out -Elections Canada- and those that didn't report on it -the mainstream media. Its quite funny and sad at the same time. What is clear is that the democratic process is not working in Canada. The numbers speak for themselves and they are there for all to see.

Get Paid to do Surveys! Yes as strange as it sounds you can get paid to do surveys and some people are actually making good money from them working at home. I didn't believe it myself until one day a couple of years ago I tried a paid online survey and about three weeks later-much to my surprise I got a $35 US check in the mail for about 15 mins of entry work.
