THINGS THAT AREN'T BULLSHIT IN CANADA

It can be more than a bit discouraging to see how much bullshit there is out there. In this website we try our best to uncover it and suggest a better way. It's also good to know that there are a lot of things in Canada that are real and good and we can be very proud of. Thank God! Here are a few examples:

RCMP Our Mounties are the best police force on the planet. No question about it. It's the way it is! Mounties are a special breed of Police Officer. They take a reasoned, common sense approach to Policing and they do it with professionalism and pride. They deal with Canadians from all walks of life; the good the bad and the ugly and they serve in all parts of Canada. As the National Police Force they are tasked with a huge variety of duties and their reputation extends all over Canada and the world. In the last decade it has become a popular story in the press to pick out examples of where errors were made and blow them all out of proportion to the huge amount of good work that the Force does every single day. This seems to appeal to the latte sucking yuppie wimp brigade in Canada that has nothing better to do than whine and bitch about everything they come into contact with. It is time for all of us to reject this and support our men and women in the red serge. Canada is the only country on the planet with Mounties and without them we wouldn't be Canada. So support your local Mountie!

My son Eric took this picture during a recent road trip across Canada in the dead of winter in Manitoba at an accident scene and sure enough there were our Mounties helping out. When you need them they are there! It could be -20 on an icy highway in the middle of nowhere. We waved at our Mountie and he smiled and waved back. It may not sound like much but after hours of driving on glare ice in the middle of Manitoba it was very reassuring to know our Mounties were there on duty when we needed them. And we think the big Bison Crest on the door and the galloping horse on the aft end of the cruiser looks really cool too! We documented that in our book The Canadian Winter Driver's Handbook which not to brag is the best book ever written on the topic and which will save your life on our winter roads.

Canada Post -Our post office is the best anywhere. They will deliver mail anywhere in this huge country on time and in any weather conditions and at a fair price with a smile!. When you consider the great distances, challenging climate and geography and the fact that millions of individual pieces of mail are processed and delivered every day you begin to understand what a great job our Post Office does.  Support your local Postie!

Canadian Armed Forces - The best anywhere. Our troops are terrific! Some of our troops have been called upon to do a forth and fifth  and even an eighth rotation to Afghanistan. And they do it. To be asked to go into a dangerous territory like this to protect Canada's interests and then to be asked to go back five and more times is way beyond the call to duty. Our troops are brave, efficient and professional and represent some of our very best citizens. And very bad things happen to you when you harm our troops as many many Taliban have discovered. It's something that never gets into the media.

JTF-2 These the boys and girls who will come to your aid when you are severely screwed in some godforsaken country and the jig is up so to speak. If you are a bad dude these are Canadians you never want to meet. In true Canadian fashion they get the job done but don't brag about and operate in a secret world so we never really know much about them. But knowing that they exist and are on the job where needed is a very good thing.

Canadian Emergency Services personnel -Firemen, Ambulance attendants, Police Officers all do a great job and they are there when you need them! It doesn't matter that it is -30 or that it's 3am when you call they come. And they solve problems you can't. And they do it day in day out.

Canadian Doctors and Nurses. It's no secret that Canada has the best Doctor's and Nurses on the planet. When you have a Canadian RN or RPN working on your case to heal you your chances are as good as they can be. I can speak from experience here. Our Southern Cousins are quite aware of this too and keep on enticing our Health Care professionals down south with promises of big pay checks and warm climates.  Thankfully most of them come back to the Great White North.

The Average Canadian - a great person -friendly honest, fit, hardworking  and helpful. Our Auto Workers build the best cars in North America. Our Forestry Workers lead the world. Our Miners and Oil Field workers are the best anywhere. Drop into any Tim Horton's and you will see average Canadians, polite, friendly and talking about the last hockey game. Visit a store in Canada and a cheerful Clerk will help you out. Stay at a Canadian Hotel or eat in a Restaurant here and you will receive good value and a smile. Say that Canadian beer sucks and you will get a black eye. But nobody is perfect.

Canadian Astronauts -the crème of the crème. Not to be confused with

Canadian Teachers -we all remember our favourite teachers who taught us how to think and made us better people! I don't know how they put up with us brats but they do and we are better people for it.

Canadian Entrepreneurs  Despite all the bullshit in Canada we still have hard working spirited Canadians who become Entrepreneurs and work hard to create wealth and keep this country going. They are saints! Without them the small Ma and Pops the medium and even large operations our country would grind to a halt, nobody would be working and everyone would be wondering what went wrong and who to blame. We have published the best book ever written about business in Canada by Author Marcie M. Farsea. Check it out!

Being Erica  This is one of the best TV shows I have ever watched and it's on the CBC (tuesday 9:00 EST). Erin Karpluk stars as Erica Strange an overqualified underachiever and the 13 part series is shot in Toronto. The idea is that we all screw up but Erica gets a chance to go back in time and redo her mistakes with the assistance of her therapist "Dr. Tom" (Michael Riley) The acting is excellent the characters are brought to life and the viewer quickly buys into and is entertained by the stories which all have an interesting twist to them with a central theme. I think that one of the reasons I like this series is that Erin Karpluk is a typical Canadian girl -attractive and smart with a sense of humour and very talented. In fact all the actors do a great job on this series and I hope it gets extended even during these difficult times.  I was hooked after 2 episodes. This show proves that despite being neighbours with a country ten times our size Canada can produce a product as good or better than anything out there!

Canadian Singers Our Canadian singers are as good or better than anybody and I thought I would include as examples three from various age groups -I know there are more but there is room for three here so here goes:

Avril Lavigne  I remember a few years ago when I was listening to the radio and heard my first Avril Lavigne tune. The first time I heard it I thought "Hey what's that! That sounds good" I took a lot of ribbing admitting that I liked her songs because apparently her main fans at the time were young teenage girls. Avril was very young when she started -16 I believe and by the time she was 20 or so had developed into an international star with millions of fans and had done it all her way. While others used semi nakedness Avril used music and sort of a racoon eye highlighter. As time went on her appearance and songs all changed and some fans found this a bit of a challenge but she continued to collect loyal fans and now is one of the most popular singers on the planet. I have included a link to our page on Avril with some more links there to associated pages.

Shania Twain Yikes Shania turned Nashville upside down when she combined rock with western. With the help of some brilliant videos Shania became one of the best loved singers on the planet. I remember being in an American Casino that had a local band when all of a sudden they started up on a Shania song and everyone there stopped playing and listened - wow that was impressive! It was the  last song in their set and it brought the house down. I have included a link to Shania's wikipedia entry and it gives an excellent overview of her accomplishments.

Anne Murray  The senior partner of Canadian female singers. Anne is loved by all Canadians and she made it here too. I have included a link to her wikipedia entry which I think you will find is both very interesting and most impressive!

Made In Canada - a website that lists sources of goods made in Canada. Support your neighbours and buy Canadian!

Hockey Canada has the best hockey players on the planet. We own the game. Its the way it is on planet Earth. Oh yes the odd time the Rooskies or some other lesser team will cheat or whatever and come up with a "win" but those are just accidents. Canadians are usually polite people who say "excuse me" too much but get them in an arena watching a Canadian team play anybody and the beast is unleashed. Then you see a glimpse of the true Canadian character and you can understand why our kids will play on a frozen lake at 25 below after Moms and Dads have helped to clear it of snow. You begin to understand why we can send our troops anywhere even with minimal equipment and they will beat the best anyone has to put up against them under any conditions. It all goes back to hockey and playing on a frozen lake or pond or river at 25 below. The true north strong and free.

Canadian Woman Anchors As a male I admit to being smitten by our female Anchors in Canada. What a wonderful group of women we have here. Both on CTV, CBC and Global, Canadian women are fabulous. Not only do they look great which I guess is a sexist thing to say (but so what) but they are intelligent and fun to listen to and very informative. Yes the men do a good job too but sorry guys I just don't think you look as good. I will name a few just for the record in no particular order; Sandie Rinaldo , Marcia McMillan,  Heather Hiscox, Kate Wheeler, Susan Bonner, Jacqueline Milczarek Carole MacNeil,  Susan Hay, Beverly Thompson, Bridget Anderson, Catherine Clark , Cindy Burgess and  Paula Todd. I could and should go on but I think I have made my point.

Canadian Senators

There are actually quite a few really good ones and the one I have picked as an example is Pierrette Ringuette  Senator Ringuette is passionate about credit card rates and trying to help the Canadian consumer and she has earned my admiration. She could sit back like some of the other senators and just collect her perks but she has chosen to make a difference. I have listened to this lady pin back the ears of Canadian bankers and ask very insightful questions of them. She does her homework, she is smart, attractive, and a true Canadian trying her very best to help improve the situation with credit card rates. Well done Pierrette! and the Senators like her that are working hard for Canadians.

Marcie Party  Here is an incredibly effective way of completely changing how politics works in Canada by hitting the old parties where it hurts -in the pocket book. For every vote the Marcie Party gets you support the platform and you save the taxpayers $7 per vote over the life of the government. Instead of tossing your vote away and funnelling money to parties who will never win anyway you now have an alternative. The Marcie Party will never collect any taxpayer money because they don't need it or want it. Four elections in five years is lunacy and here is your chance to opt out but let the rascals know what you want. Each election costs in excess of $300,000,000 and disrupts the functioning of government including the delivery of government services so the actual cost is much more. Don't get mad get even! VOTE MARCIE PARTY IN O9!!

Canadian Public Servants -Oh sure we pick on them but the fact is they are a dedicated, hard working, honest and friendly group for the most part and they do a hell of a good job. But don't tell them that or they will be spoiled!

Canadian Members of Parliament Canadians have a love hate relationship with their politicians. The Country has so many special interest groups that it is almost impossible to lead so the best leaders are the ones who just get down and do their jobs and stop trying to play politics all the time. Unfortunately we have a PM who loves playing politics and has forgotten that he sets the standard for behaviour in the House of Commons. First of all we elect them and then soon, after a cooling down period, we start hurling rotten vegetables at them. Just to mention some particularly fine MP's that ARE doing their jobs we have Minister of Health Leona Aglukkaq, NDP Defence Critic Dawn Black, Liberal MP Anthony Rota who is PM material and even the Bloc has a few good ones despite the fact they really want to separate from the country! It is a very tough job and for every ten people that love you 3 or more hate your guts!

YOUR VERY FIRST BILLION -finally somebody comes clean on how to operate a successful business in Canada -all the stuff you need to know but nobody will tell you! Ok I admit it we published this book so we know that it is good! In fact its' the best book ever published about business in Canada".

At the End of My Leash If you have or want to have a dog in the family or if you just like dogs this is the show for you! Brad Pattison is passionate about training dogs. Some might say he is a bit intense about it but look at the results. In fact I have tried several ideas from the show and they work! So for an entertaining and  great learning experience watch a few of Brad's shows. Shot in BC and Alberta another example of Canadian talent.

Volunteers  Many people in Canada volunteer their time and energy and even their personal resources to help their fellow Canadians and people around the world. There are millions of examples from those helping in boy scouts and girl guides to hockey and soccer coaches to people working in food banks and soup kitchens and volunteers who go overseas. I can't mention them all here so I picked one person as an example.

Jenny Flett – Fort Chipewyan, AB

"For over 60 years, Jenny Flett served as the midwife for the community of Fort Chipewyan. She delivered 487 babies. No babies or mothers died under Flett’s watch—a relative miracle given that some of the babies were born in remote locations in extreme weather conditions in homes that didn’t have electricity. And she did all this without collecting a penny from anyone. She did it because she loved the work and the people she worked for. Typically she would spend up to 10 days with the mothers and their babies after the birth. It was a labour of love from which she never profited..."

Now think about that for a moment. How could you deliver 487 babies in those sorts of conditions and not lose even one! And do it all on a volunteer basis. So I looked up Jenny's name on the listings for the Members. Officers and Companions for the Order of Canada and guess what? She didn't make the list. A lot of politicians did -but not Jenny. I must ask why? If anyone deserves recognition Jenny Flett does.

CANADA THE TRUE NORTH STRONG AND FREE! (Yes Sir it's True!)

Over 80% of the Canadian population lives within 100 miles of the Canada-USA border!!! And most of them live in a few large cities. So one could argue how is our North Strong and Free? As far as the north goes nearly all of it is completely empty! We don't even have a ship in Canada capable of going thru the Northwest Passage. In fact we have so under populated the far north that others including our friends to the south are laying claim to parts of it. Luckily there are two sides to this story. We do have a significant force in the form of 4100 Canadian Rangers and an additional 3000 Junior Rangers on guard in Northern Canada. Its a unique force with an important job and part of the Canadian military Reserve Force. They do excellent work!  Ok I guess we are strong and free. I just wish we had more Canadians willing to join with our hardy citizens in  the far North and help develop it. No fighting traffic on the 401, no smog, no living like sardines in an overpriced condo -the True North Strong and Free!

Canadian Hero's We know who they are but don't brag about it. But I will give you a hint-the Oil Service Technician who comes out to your house on a Sunday night at 35 below to fix your furnace so your family won't freeze to death and then tells you it was just a small thing and don't worry its all covered by your annual contract. The Mom's and Dads who dedicate their lives to raising their kids and the kids who are Scouts and Guides and Beavers and collect bottles to fund their troops and our Soldiers who are sent to distant shores to protect Canada's interests and the Girls at the Donut shop who are always happy to serve and have a smile and the Teachers who make a difference in our careers by being so darn good! The Government workers who work a few extra minutes at the end of their shifts to serve the public because they want to do a good job even though we pick on them all the time. The young man at the gas pumps who pumps your gas at close to minimum wage and listens to two hundred people a day blame him for the high prices. Our Nurses who help us out when we are sick and try their very best to look after us and help us get well again. They really are heroes.  Its quite a long list so I better stop here.

Maybe one more -the young man with Cancer and one leg that made it half way across the country to raise money for fighting the disease and showed us all how to make the very best of what you have. And the other young man with Cancer and one leg who I saw make it across Canada and dip his artificial leg into the Pacific ( Steve Fonyo -well done Steve!). I was in the crowd in the last few hundred feet of that journey cheering him on!  Welcome to Canada the greatest country in the world! Although we usually don't admit that.

There are lots of Canadian heroes. We know who they are. We just don't brag about it all the time. And maybe we should. A little.
