T SHIRTS WITHOUT POCKETS ARE FOR GIRLS!
Some of you might think -wow this guy is obnoxious! He doesn't like anything! How untrue that would be. One of the few things that I don't like is T shirts without pockets. There is -and by this time you might not be surprised to hear this, -a huge amount of bullshit associated with T shirts and pockets.
It goes something like this. Making a T shirt is not difficult. The process is now automated and machines do everything from cutting material to assembly and stitching. However, adding the pocket is an extra step in the process. That means an extra cost.
The t shirt market is very competitive. The variables are the amount of material used, the type of material, the sizing, the decision to add a pocket or not, the color and type of dye used, quality control, the price and the volume. That's all I can think of -there may be more!
So back in the board room the boys and girls are gathered around deciding how to market their T Shirts. They have a lot of decisions to make. The final product is what you buy or not in the stores. They have a lot of competing objectives but the key one is their bottom line- they want to make some money. Nothing wrong with that!
If they sell you a poor quality T Shirt that falls apart or fits uncomfortably or wears poorly you will never buy their brand again. They understand this concept. They want to sell you a T shirt today and another one later on and another one after that. They want to be your T shirt supplier.
But at the same time they realize that if they cut corners and reduce costs to a certain level -they can still sell their product and have a good chance at return sales.
So the first thing that goes is the pocket. Then they skimp on the material a bit by making the T shirt a bit shorter. They drop the taped seams and by this time the T shirt is a piece of crap. Its not comfortable, it won't fit, there is no pocket for your stuff and when you wear it you look like you are wearing cheap clothes that don't fit. But you saved a couple of bucks on the price and the retailer made a couple more!
In Canada we have the Penman's brand. It was formed in 1868 and at one time was the largest supplier of woolens and knitted goods in Canada. The name had excellent brand recognition because of the length of time the company was active and the market share it had in Canada. However and here is where the bullshit starts.. Wal Mart bought them out in 1996 (in order to trick Canadian consumers into thinking they were buying a Canadian brand) and converted it to a house brand. They used the proud Penman name ON PRODUCTS MADE IN CHINA!! opps the caps lock key came on. And other low labor cost locations. Gone was the tradition of Penman's quality. Bullshit!
That takes us back to the pocket on T-shirts. I purchased five T-shirts from Wal-mart made by Penman's. They were made in China. None of them had pockets. They were inexpensive and cheaply made. And they weren't as long in the trunk as my Russell Athletics T shirt with the taped seams and pocket (made in India) which cost more but which I prefer and am willing to pay more for.
I have learned my lesson. I will never buy a "Penmans" brand product again. (Well if do I will know its not the old Penman's quality) T-shirts without pockets are for girls. Guys like to stick things in their pockets like glasses and pens and small tools and stuff. Girls are more fashion conscious and look better in a plain T shirt anyway.
