When you buy a watch you can purchase one that displays the time in numbers (ie digital) or you can purchase one that displays time by the position of an hour and a minute hand (i.e. analogue). Surely there is no bullshit here you say. Sadly I must report-there is! A considerable amount of it unfortunately.
First of all you need to understand just what time is. Its not as simple as you might think. A person could easily write a book about time!
But basically time is a measure of when events happen and how long they happen for. As an example if you have lunch at noon when you look at your watch you want to know how soon that event will occur and if you are eating lunch you may want to be aware of how long that event will last possibly because you have a customer to meet at 1pm.
When you look at an analogue watch you see at a quick glance a relationship between the long minute hand and the shorter hour hand. That gives you an understanding of how long you have to wait for an event to occur and it also helps you to track the event and tell when it should end.
But, when you look at a digital watch you notice several things. First of all there is a lot of information coming at you -the day of the month, the month, the hour, the minute, second, if it is am or pm and the time you see displayed is simply a number -you need to interpret it. You also notice that the display is hard to read as you need to get the angle to your eye right and in low light it sucks. It takes longer to read a digital display and you often find yourself missing appointments as you can't properly judge the time left for an event to occur.
There is another factor at work here. The human body is not digital its analogue! Its no surprise then that we better understand analogue time. Actually a computer which is digital would be better suited for a digital watch!
The bullshit is that these sorts of things are never told to you when you go out and buy a watch. You need to figure them out yourself by buying the wrong watch and finally having it sink it which one you like better. Sometimes the light never comes on.
The danger is what if you are a pilot or a person who absolutely must get the time correct and you buy the wrong watch. Did you know that in airplanes analogue indicators are all designed to point north (up) so that pilots can tell at a glance if anything is wrong. Can you imagine having all digital readouts and having to interpret all those numbers on a continuous basis?
I think it all comes down to this. There is a difference between digital and analogue displays of time. Humans can better organize their time with analogue displays because they have a better understanding of when an event will occur and how much longer the event will last. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be an appreciation of this basic fact within our society and consequently people are buying and using the wrong watches for their applications and are making errors and suffering as a result. It the old didn't know the problem exists situation again. Its bullshit.
I have a timex ironman datalink watch that plugs into my computer. I hate it although it does contain a lot of information that I can barely see. I have had two of them over the years and this one has a USB input cable. I also own a few analogue watches and they are much easier to use and I prefer them for every day use. My favourite is a divers watch with a moveable minute bezel. For military use I prefer the analogue watches and if I need to keep to a schedule again the analogue watches are the way to go.
You might not think that this is all that important but before you dismiss it -what if the pilot of the plane you were on was continually making time errors due to the fact he had the wrong type of wrist watch. What if the doctor operating on your brain started to make mistakes about the length of time left in the operation because he had the wrong wrist watch or if the operating room time display was digital instead of analogue. What if a senior executive of the company you hold your retirement fund stock in is having problems managing her time because of the type of watch her husband bought for her for Christmas? It can and does come back to bite us. This thing we call...bullshit!
Update March 27/2008 I try and review each topic on the website on a regular basis and update them as necessary with new developments. After looking at this one I realize that I absolutely nailed the topic. Its high quality information that if used will save you time and money and make your life easier and more efficient. What gets me frustrated is that the people who sell watches don't tell you these very basic things and I suspect that most of them don't even understand the problem. Which is ridiculous or as we say here bullshit! This is fun!
We own two websites which offer quality name brand watches for sale at very competitive prices. Check them out!
